“Playing as a solo bass, without the basses” – that is, without any accompaniment, miming virtual armonies on bass instruments that, until then, had been relegated to doubling roles or short concertante stretches: this was the marvellous invention by Emilian and Neapolitan cello players by the end of the 17th Century. For a long time, especially in France, Germany and England, the newcomer competed with the captivating and naturally polyphonic sound of the aristocratic viola da gamba. This programme will put on scene paradoxical exchanges and hybridations between the two cousins/rivals, with three musicians with a solid baroque training, specialized in the performance with original instruments.
