10 musicians in complete darkness for seventy minutes, led by a grand piano with a radically modified tuning. Effects and variations flourish on slowly moving sound blocks, culminating in a four-minutes-long chord. The author of this peculiar experiment in perception is Georg Friedrich Haas (born 1953), an Austrian composer known for his ventures into sound and for his intrepid experimentalism, now professor at the Columbia University in New York. For Haas, listening is “a practice close to meditation”, where you need to remove any other element of disturbance.
