  • Pëtr Il’ič Čajkovskij Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 “Pathétique”

The legendary Gnessin School of Moscow was founded by three pupils of Vasily Safonov, Scriabin’s teacher, and since the late nineteenth century has trained some of Russia’s finest pianists. Among them is Alexander Malofeev (born in 2001), whom Italian audiences first encountered at the age of fourteen in a breakthrough evening at La Scala, in the very months when Daniele Giorgi was founding the Orchestra Leonore.

Their fulfilled promises now meet in the iconic Piano Concerto by Edvard Grieg, one of the defining works of Nordic Romanticism, and in the rarely performed Second Concerto by the Finnish composer Selim Palmgren—often described as the “Sibelius of the piano”—who paints a poetic portrait of the Kokemäki River, both in a symbolist vein and in a richly Romantic idiom.

These works reveal two distinct yet kindred forms of solitude, shared by the Scandinavian composers and by Tchaikovsky, who in his final creative outpouring casts aside all masks in a deeply personal musical confession.
