Nadin Qubain
req
A concert dedicated to the sounds, colours, and atmospheres of the entire Arab world, featuring Rula Jaradat, a Jordanian-born orchestra conductor and founder of the first all-female ensemble of traditional music in her country. She is also a refined virtuoso of the qanun, an instrument with 78 strings stretched over an inlaid wooden trapeze, boasting a range of three and a half octaves. This “magical” and hypnotic instrument is immersed in an aura of sacredness, serving as a foundation for Arab instrumental music. Alongside her is Nadin Qubain, playing the req (or riqq), a small frame drum with metal cymbals. Qubain is a composer, musicologist, violinist, and percussionist who trained at the National Conservatory of Music in Amman.
