Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36
The first collaboration between the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai and Kirill Petrenko—the Russian-born Austrian conductor who has led the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2019—dates back to 2001, with an unforgettable performance of Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. In the years that followed, their programmes have never been conventional or predictable.
In this eighth joint concert, the incandescent, highly charged sonorities of Bartók’s concert suite The Miraculous Mandarin are preceded by Janáček’s Lašské tance (Lachian Dances), one of his freshest and most vibrant orchestral works inspired by folk traditions.
In the second half, Petrenko presents what is perhaps the most unjustly overlooked of Beethoven’s symphonies: the Second.
