The musical partnership between Sol Gabetta and Bertrand Chamayou has now spanned more than a decade. Both born in 1981, they share not only the same zodiac sign but also many musical affinities: Chopin, for instance—whose works they recorded in 2015—and Mendelssohn, whose complete works for cello and piano they have performed and recorded, interweaving, in a dialogue between past and present, contributions by contemporary composers.
The Bologna concert reflects the concept behind that recording: framed by Mendelssohn’s Variations, Op. 17, and Sonata, Op. 58, are the “variations” on his Lied ohne Worte by Wolfgang Rihm and Jörg Widmann, with Brahms’s powerful and energetic Sonata No. 2 at the centre.
