Within the chain linking masters and pupils of the so-called “Bolognese school”, Padre Stanislao Mattei (1750–1825) occupies a central position. On the one hand, he was the favourite pupil of Giambattista Martini; on the other, he served as a teacher—at various stages—to Rossini, Donizetti, and Morlacchi.
His long life unfolded along the three principal lines of activity typical of the time: teaching, institutional appointments, and composition. His catalogue includes music for liturgical and devotional use (masses, oratorios, motets, responsories), a theatrical work, and twenty-seven symphonies.
On the occasion of the bicentenary of his death, Officina San Francesco Bologna promotes a study day as well as the first complete revival of the second version of the Oratorio della Passione—in which the young Rossini also sang in 1806—composed in 1792 to a libretto by Pietro Metastasio.
