Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, English instrumental music forged a distinctive identity, transforming Italian influences into a highly personal language. In Splendid Isolation, light dance forms coexist with refined polyphony, from the works of William Byrd to the celebrated melancholic Lachrimae by John Dowland, and the inventive writing of Anthony Holborne.
The programme also evokes the spirit of the madrigal, transmitted across the Channel through the collection Musica transalpina, and imagines an intimate, dialogic form of chamber music. This is the hallmark of the Accademia Strumentale Italiana, founded by viol player Alberto Rasi, here performing with a rich blend of lute, viols, and violone, capturing the depth and elegance of a rare repertoire.
