With John Cage, the piano becomes a laboratory of timbre: screws, bolts, and objects placed between the strings transform the instrument into a theatrical and sonic gesture. Today, this exploration can extend beyond the material itself, as demonstrated by Emanuele Arciuli—one of the foremost interpreters of American music—through an idea of “preparation” that also embraces the digital realm: the hammer interacts with sensors and sampling, opening up new listening possibilities.
The programme interweaves experimentation and tradition through the form of variations: from Haydn, with his classical clarity, to a path that engages with jazz and Thelonious Monk, and onward to contemporary works written for Arciuli. An itinerary that highlights how variation remains, both past and present, a fertile ground for reinvention and musical memory.
