Tan Dun and the Poetics of Water: Water & Spirit with FontanaMIX

  • Tan Dun Elegy: Elegy: Snow in June for cello and percussion
  • Tan Dun Prayer and Blessing for 12 tam-tams, soprano, and string quartet
  • Tan Dun Water Music for four percussionists
  • Tan Dun Eight Colors (Peking Opera) for string quartet

Water & Spirit invites the audience into the imaginative world of Tan Dun, a composer who continues to seek a dialogue between East and West, between the memory of ancient traditions and contemporary sensibility. In this programme, water is not merely a symbol: it becomes a sounding material, a “singing” presence capable of merging with percussion and strings in a theatre of timbre and resonance.

The FontanaMIX Ensemble, long engaged in contemporary music and premieres, presents a programme centred on the physicality of sound: skins, metals, percussive gestures, and Western string instruments interact and transform, creating an immersive listening experience that moves between ritual and invention.
