The Ancient and the New coexist naturally, side by side, within the “home” of the string quartet. Under the auspices of mdi ensemble, the quartet’s “sixteen strings” engage with both a late nineteenth-century masterpiece such as Debussy’s String Quartet, Op. 10—composed under the strong influence of César Franck and his concept of “cyclical form”—and a brand-new work by Daniela Terranova, a student of Azio Corghi and Beat Furrer.
What unites them is a shared inclination toward a highly expressive sound gesture: implicit in Debussy, explicit—leaning towards the “creation of a choreography of sound”—in the style of the Italian composer, whose String Trio, written in 2018 and dedicated to the ensemble, is also featured in the programme.
