Ensemble Ars Vulgaris Paolo Da Col conductor Illumina oculos meos. Almost a Liturgy around Palestrina
The resonances of sixteenth-century polyphony are boundless, reaching across the centuries into the present day. Paolo Da Col and Odhecaton capture them with their customary mastery, presenting a highly original project that plays on reflections, echoes and contrasts between the musical liturgy of Palestrina and contemporary music.
At the core of the programme lies the Missa Illumina oculos meos, preserved in a manuscript held in the Cappella Apostolica, which also contains the celebrated Missa Papae Marcelli. Upon this foundation are grafted the inspirations that composers such as Pärt, Rihm, Stravinsky and Scelsi have drawn from sacred texts of the past.
