The multifaceted creativity of Thomas Hengelbrock—spanning conducting, musicology, and stage direction—has led to the founding of one of the most admired period-instrument orchestras, alongside an outstanding Academy dedicated to young talents. A demanding test awaits in Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, a work of rhythmic exhilaration and dynamic architectural force.
The programme leads to Beethoven through Mozart and Haydn: from Mozart’s symphonic writing to the operatic brilliance of Al desio di chi t’adora, an aria composed for a Vienna revival of Le nozze di Figaro in 1789, here entrusted to the highly expressive voice of Kate Lindsey. Completing the programme is Haydn’s Berenice, che fai?, a dramatic cantata in which delicacy and vehemence coexist within the full expressive climate of Sturm und Drang.
