  • Milij Balakirev Islamey: Oriental Fantasy, Op. 18

For pianists such as the Canadian Sophia Liu (born in 2008), age alone cannot account for the maturity of her artistry: lyrical intimacy and virtuosity coexist in a programme that places song, dance and narrative at its core.

Chopin opens with the Nocturne Op. 9 No. 3, moves through the folk roots of the Mazurkas, and ignites in the drama of the First Ballade and the brilliance of the Scherzo Op. 54. With Tchaikovsky, the melancholic Dumka and the poetic miniatures of The Seasons broaden the expressive horizon. Balakirev brings the programme to a close with Islamey: a whirlwind of “Oriental” colour and a formidable test of technical daring, which over time has become a true benchmark of virtuosity.
